Pain is a frequent concern among Dr. Ronald Trevisani’s dental implant patients. Although the process of placing and restoring dental implants is complex, it should not cause patients pain, stress or harm.
If you are considering dental implants, it helps to educate yourself about the procedure and what to expect. To ease your mind and the minds of other prospective candidates, Dr. Trevisani, an Orlando implant dentist, addresses the concerns in more detail here.
Dental Implants Shouldn’t Hurt
Dental implant placement is not a painful oral surgery procedure. For the most part, as long as you are in good health and you work with an experienced, reputable implant dentist like Dr. Trevisani, you should not experience pain during or after implant placement.
The right implant dentists know how to handle the bone and tissue very delicately, and work quickly to prevent significant post-operative pain. They also know how to properly set your expectations so you avoid feeling stressed or anxious about your experience.
What You Can Expect During and After Implant Placement
The first surgical procedure to place dental implants in the jawbone is performed with local anesthesia (or sedation if needed), so you should not feel anything. If sedation is used, you will be monitored throughout your entire procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.
After this surgery, you might have some soreness for a few hours as the numbness or sedation wears off. There are not many pain receptors in the bone where the implant is placed, but there are some in the soft tissues of the gums. But the soreness should not be significant. Some patients say it is comparable to having a tooth extracted or a root canal.
Any discomfort can be easily managed by taking a mild dose of prescription or over-the-counter pain medication as directed by Dr. Trevisani for a day or two. Applying an ice pack can also help soothe discomfort.
You should be able to return to work and the rest of your normal activities the day after the surgical placement.
The subsequent stage of dental implant placement involves covering the implant post with the artificial tooth (usually a crown). Patients usually do not report any pain or discomfort associated with this step, but if an unexpected side effect occurs, Dr. Trevisani is available to consult with at any time.
