Orlando Dental Implants FAQs

Dr. Ronald Trevisani is one of Orlando’s most trusted dental implants providers. To help you better understand the popular tooth replacement method, he answers the most frequently asked questions below.

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that replace missing teeth. An implant is composed of a titanium post that is placed in the jawbone. An artificial restoration (e.g., a crown or bridge) is then affixed to the top of the implant post to recreate the look and feel of a natural tooth. Implants blend in beautifully with surrounding natural teeth.

You may be a good candidate for dental implants if you are in good general health, free of any chronic medical conditions which could compromise your healing and have healthy gum tissue with no signs of periodontal disease.

Prior to implant placement, Dr. Trevisani will check the jawbone to ensure its health and strength. A lack of healthy jawbone will not necessarily preclude a candidate from qualifying for implants, but some type of grafting may be required to supplement the bone.

The placement of traditional dental implants is a three-stage process. First, Dr. Trevisani surgically places the titanium post in the jawbone. The post must heal and integrate with the bone for a period of approximately three to six months (certain cases are shorter or longer). After the bone has healed, the top of the post is uncovered and the permanent tooth restoration is placed. For a single tooth replacement, a porcelain crown is typically used. For multiple teeth replacement, a bridge may be used. If more than several teeth need to be replaced, Dr. Trevisani can use the Hybridge appliance.

The placement process can vary, depending on the case.

Implant post placement is not painful, but it is a surgery. Anesthesia and sedation medication are usually administered. Dr. Trevisani and his team do everything possible to make the overall experience as pain-free as possible. There may be slight discomfort during the surgical recovery, but Dr. Trevisani can prescribe oral medication to ease any pain.

Dental implants restore the ability to eat, speak and smile naturally and comfortably. What makes them more advantageous than other tooth replacement options is the implant posts stimulate the jawbone and prevent it from deteriorating. Other tooth replacement options (e.g., a traditional bridge or dentures) do not provide this stimulation. Also, dental implants do not rely on the surrounding teeth for structural support, like a traditional bridge does. Since implants are secured to the jawbone, they will not shift or slip around in the mouth like ill-fitting dentures are prone to do.

If you have lost most or all of your teeth, Dr. Trevisani may recommend the Hybridge appliance. Hybridge is an innovative tooth replacement option that is based on dental implant technology. The Hybridge prosthesis clips onto the top of several implant posts, and can replace up to an entire arch of upper and/or lower teeth.

With the proper care, implants can last for many years. Implants have an incredibly high success rate when they are maintained and checked regularly by a dental professional.

Dental implants cost varies by case, depending on how many implants are needed, the type of implants used and other factors. Insurance may or may not cover part of the cost; coverage varies by plan and provider. Dr. Trevisani can discuss cost in greater detail during a dental implants consultation at his Orlando-area practice.
